Stretching tours and away practices: how a vacation in Spain (the city of Cuera) helps to reboot the body and mind

Training in stuffy, artificially lit and air-conditioned gyms often turns into a mechanical routine. The body perceives such conditions as just another task in a busy schedule, resisting deep relaxation. Practice shows that a radical change of scenery and transfer of classes to a natural environment can speed up progress in Stretching several times. That is why the format of on-site intensives, such as our training tour in the Spanish city of Cuera (Valencia), taking place from June 1 to July 3, demonstrates a completely different level of results compared to a regular fitness club membership.

In a month of deep immersion on the Mediterranean coast, participants achieve what would take months of hard work in an urban environment. And the point here is not only in the number of training hours, but in the synergy of climate, physiology, biomechanics and psychology. Having escaped from its usual environment, the body rebuilds adaptation mechanisms, turns off protective muscle spasms and allows you to work with deep fascial structures as safely as possible.

Climate physiology: how the heat and humidity of Valencia change the body

For effective and safe development of flexibility, environmental conditions are critical. In cold climates or indoors with aggressive air conditioning, the body instinctively protects itself: peripheral blood vessels constrict to conserve core heat, and basal muscle tone increases. Working with cold, hard tissue means risking micro-tears and tendon inflammation.

The microclimate of Cuera works as a natural therapeutic factor. The combination of consistently high temperatures and humid sea air creates the effect of soft thermotherapy. Heat exposure causes peripheral vasodilation - dilation of blood vessels, which leads to a massive flow of oxygenated blood to the muscles, ligaments and fascia. The collagen fibers that make up our connective tissue have the property of viscoelasticity. As the temperature of the body and the environment increases, they become more pliable and their resistance to Stretching decreases.

The humidity of the sea air also plays a non-obvious but important role. It prevents rapid dehydration through the skin during intense exercise, helping to maintain optimal levels of tissue hydration. Moisturized fascia glides more smoothly without forming adhesions, and synovial fluid in the joints is produced in sufficient volume, providing a painless range of motion. Under such conditions, the body stretches like heated plasticine - deeply, smoothly and without rollbacks.

Psychosomatics and biomechanics: connection between the central nervous system and muscle tone

The main enemy of flexibility is not genetics or age, but chronic stress. The central nervous system tightly controls the length of each muscle through proprioceptors (muscle spindles and Golgi apparatus). When a person is in a state of constant stress (deadlines, traffic jams, lack of sleep), the sympathetic department of the autonomic nervous system is hyperactive. Cortisol and adrenaline are steadily released into the blood. The brain perceives the environment as hostile and gives the command to maintain the muscular armor - a protective spasm, especially in the area of the cervical-collar region, lower back and iliopsoas muscles.

Attempts to aggressively pull a body that is in a state of stress readiness only lead to an increase in the myotatic reflex - the muscle contracts in response to Stretching. The away tour completely breaks this pattern. A change of environment, lack of everyday tasks and the sound of the sea surf activate the parasympathetic nervous systemresponsible for rest and recovery. Your cortisol levels drop sharply. The brain understands: there is no threat, there is no need to defend yourself. As a result, the reticular formation of the brain stem reduces excitatory signals to alpha motor neurons, and the muscles literally “release” tension even before physical work begins.

It is this physiological reset that allows us to work on those areas that have been resistant to Stretching in urban environments for years. A person relaxes mentally, and his body automatically increases the range of movements.

Full immersion program: from morning mobility to evening static

The monthly training cycle from June 1 to July 3 is built taking into account circadian rhythms and the body’s natural recovery cycles. We do not train for wear, we use competent biomechanics and alternating loads. The program includes elements of Pilates to strengthen the deep muscle corset, classical yoga to control breathing, and my own non-contact Stretching technique, which I have been continuously improving since 2009.

Morning block: joint mobilization and breathing

The morning on the coast begins with a soft activation. We don't do aggressive splits immediately after waking up. The purpose of the morning session is to launch lymphatic drainage, disperse synovial fluid in the joints and prepare the nervous system for an active day. Practice includes:

  • Myofascial release of the feet and calf muscles (areas that take the brunt of the impact).
  • Rotational movements to mobilize the thoracic spine, relieving stiffness after sleep.
  • Breathing practices that increase chest excursion and activate the diaphragm. Proper movement of the diaphragm directly affects the relaxation of the lumbar region and pelvic floor.
  • Soft dynamic stretches of the posterior superficial line of the body.

Evening block: deep structural Stretching

In the evening, when the air temperature drops and the body is maximally warmed up by everyday activity and the warm climate, it is time for deep work. It uses a non-contact Stretching method based on post-isometric muscle relaxation (PIR) and active isolated Stretching.

In evening practice, we hold static positions for 2-3 minutes, giving the fascial tissue time for plastic deformation. An important aspect of the non-contact method is the absence of external violent pressure. The trainer acts as a navigator, correcting the angles in the joints, the vectors of force application and the position of the pelvis, but the person does the main work himself, using the strength of the antagonist muscles and conscious relaxation as he exhales. This eliminates the risk of injury and forms a new, safe movement pattern in the nervous system.

Two ways: student format and coaching course

The intensive course in Spain is divided into two parallel directions so that each participant receives exactly the result for which he came. Both groups live in the same rhythm, but the tasks and depth of immersion in theory are radically different.

Student course: for health, posture and freedom of movement

This format is created for those who want to devote a month only to themselves. The main goal is to eliminate muscle imbalances, get rid of chronic back and neck pain, straighten your posture and, of course, do the splits safely or improve your backbends. Students concentrate on their own feelings. We are consistently working on:

  • Opening the thoracic region and eliminating hyperkyphosis (stooping), characteristic of a sedentary lifestyle.
  • Mobilization of the hip joints, which relieves compression from the lower back.
  • Restoring the elasticity of the hamstrings and calf muscles.
  • Integrating new amplitudes into everyday movements so that the results last long after returning home.

Coaching course: profession, biomechanics and diploma

For those who plan to connect their lives with teaching or want to deepen their knowledge to a professional level, a coaching course is provided. This is a full-fledged training in a profession, where physical practice is complemented by a powerful theoretical block.

Coaching students study functional anatomy, joint structure, biomechanics of Stretching and connective tissue physiology. We analyze in detail how to work with different body types, age groups and clients with limitations (protrusions, hernias, scoliosis). The main emphasis is on mastering the non-contact Stretching technique: how to see compensation in the client’s body, how to correctly give voice commands and how to build a training progression. Upon completion of the 30-day intensive course and successful passing of practical exams, participants receive an official diploma confirming their qualifications.

How to prepare for a fitness tour: practical recommendations

If this is your first time planning to attend a training intensive retreat, proper preparation will help you avoid adjustment stress and get the most out of it from day one.

  • Adequate assessment of initial data: Don't try to force things a week before departure. The best preparation is light joint exercises and walking. You should not come to the intensive in a state of severe soreness after trying to “quickly pump up” for vacation.
  • Water-salt balance management: Exercising in the Spanish summer (even morning and evening) leads to the loss of electrolytes through sweat. Be sure to take isotonic complexes or magnesium with you to avoid muscle cramps during exercise.
  • Rule "5 out of 10": In a new, relaxing environment, it’s easy to succumb to euphoria and stretch yourself more than usual. Follow the pain scale strictly. Pain when Stretching should not exceed 4-5 points out of 10 possible. The pulling sensation should be comfortable, breathing should be free. If you hold your breath or involuntarily clench your teeth, you injure the tissue.
  • Recovery Focus: Free time between workouts is intended to assimilate the load. Swimming in the cool sea perfectly tones the blood vessels, and sleep after lunch (siesta) is critical for restoring the nervous system.

The Cuera retreat is not just a series of workouts on the beach. This is a deep reboot of all body systems. A month of living in an ideal climate, with a verified biomechanical load and the absence of everyday stress, allows you to erase the tension that has accumulated over the years. You return not only with a new level of flexibility and beautiful relief, but also with a completely renewed nervous system, ready for new challenges.
