splits after 40 years - is it real?

Greetings! My name is Vyacheslav Komakha. I've been teaching flexibility to people since 2009 - and I'm seeing possibilities in their bodies that they didn't even know existed. Every day in my classes and on the website flexderek.com I hear the same question, full of doubts and hidden hope: “Vyacheslav, is it really possible to sit on twine after 40 years, if I've never exercised before and I feel like wood? My answer is always clear: absolutely real. Moreover, regular Stretching in adulthood - this is not just a whim or the pursuit of a beautiful photo on social networks, but a vital necessity for maintaining youthful joints, getting rid of back pain and restoring ease of movement. Let's take a closer look at how to restore natural body flexibility without pain, injury and disappointment, even if you are well over forty.

Anatomy of age: what happens to the body after 40 and why splits after forty are a special story

When a thirty-year-old student comes to me, we can move at a fairly brisk pace. But when a person appears on the doorstep who decides to master splits after forty years, I completely rebuild my training strategy. The body at forty, fifty and sixty years old has its own physiological characteristics that are stupid and dangerous to ignore. Understanding these processes is half your success on the road to agility.

Changes in collagen structure and ligament elasticity

Over the years, the body naturally slows down the synthesis of collagen, a protein that is responsible for the strength and elasticity of connective tissue. Ligaments, tendons and fascia (the sheath that covers our muscles) become stiffer, “dry” and less flexible to stretch. If at 20 you could allow yourself to do the splits after a week of chaotic training thanks to your natural plasticity, then after 40 this approach will lead you straight to the traumatologist’s office. We need to act more subtly: not to stretch the ligaments by force, but to gradually change their structure through regular, gentle and systematic influence.

Synovial fluid deficiency and joint mobility

Adult joints require delicate handling. Synovial fluid, which acts as a lubricant inside the joint capsule, is produced in smaller quantities during a sedentary lifestyle. Without a good warm-up and proper Stretching, the hip joints literally begin to rub against each other, causing discomfort and accelerating wear of the cartilage tissue. Our task is to restore mobility to joints, improve tissue nutrition and launch the production of natural taste through correct amplitude movements.

Muscle memory and accumulated tension

By the age of forty, our body accumulates a huge baggage of motor patterns, muscle tension and psychological stress. Sedentary work, stress, old untreated injuries - all this gets stuck in the body in the form of hard blocks. Your muscles have simply forgotten how to relax. Therefore, working on the splits in adulthood is, first of all, work on retraining the nervous system and removing these long-term blocks.

Vyacheslav Komakha’s safe Stretching method: how to do the splits after forty years without injury

Over the years of coaching practice, I have developed my own methodology, which allows my mature students to achieve incredible results without tears, screams and torn muscles. Forget about the harsh methods of the Soviet school of gymnastics, where coaches sat on top of students to “press” them to the floor. In adulthood, such vandalism is excluded.

The principle of non-violence over the body and working on the edge of comfort

The main secret to successful Stretching after 40 years is the ability to listen to your body. We stretch only in the zone of the so-called “sweet pain”. This is a condition when you feel a strong muscle tension, but at the same time you can breathe freely, smile and not clench your teeth from tension. If you begin to tremble, hold your breath, or strain your entire body to hold the pose, you have crossed the line. At this moment, the brain turns on the protective myotatic reflex and commands the muscles to contract even stronger to avoid rupture. You start fighting with your own body, which always leads to injury and zero progress.

Nervous system and deep relaxation

splits are not just stretched muscles, it is a state of your nervous system. The muscles will not stretch as long as your brain considers this position dangerous. My technique is based on teaching deep relaxation through breathing. A slow, deep exhalation signals the parasympathetic nervous system: “It’s okay, we’re safe.” Only after this the brain removes the muscle block, and you drop a few centimeters lower without any effort. We teach the body to trust us.

Regularity vs Intensity

Many people think that if they stretch for three hours once a week, they will quickly do the splits. This is a deep misconception. It is much more effective to exercise 3-4 times a week for 40-50 minutes. Connective tissue adapts slowly. She needs constant, gentle impulses to readjust. Regularity creates a cumulative effect, while infrequent and too intense training only injures sleep-deprived muscles.

Step-by-step training plan for body flexibility after 40 years

In order for your Stretching to bring joy and visible results, the training process must be strictly structured. Each lesson should consist of three mandatory stages: high-quality warm-up, targeted work on joints and muscles, and smooth grounding (relaxation).

Warm-up is the foundation of your safety

Never start reaching “cold”. Warm-up should take at least 15 minutes. Your goal is to raise your body temperature, slightly increase your heart rate, and get blood flowing to your muscles and joints. The muscles should become soft and warm, like plasticine. Use light joint exercises:

  • Soft rotations in the ankle, knee and hip joints.
  • Squats with a wide stance to activate the adductors.
  • Tilt the body to the sides and forward with a round back.
  • Light running in place or dynamic kicks with small amplitudes.

A basic set of exercises to open the pelvis and back of the thigh

Before attempting to do a longitudinal or transverse splits, you need to prepare your pelvis and back of the thigh. Here are four golden exercises to get you started:

  • Deep lunges (Lunge): Excellent stretch for the hip flexors and quadriceps. Make sure that the knee of the front leg is strictly above the heel at an angle of 90 degrees, and the pelvis tends downward under its own weight. Keep your back straight.
  • Half splits Pose: From the grazing position, shift your weight back by straightening your front leg and pulling your toes toward you. Stretch your stomach towards your thigh, keeping your back as straight as possible. Avoid rounding at the lower back.
  • Butterfly with soft pressure: Sit on the floor, bring your feet together and pull them towards you. Gently direct your knees towards the floor using the force of your leg muscles, helping yourself with your hands only as you exhale. This exercise opens the hip joints, preparing them for the cross splits.
  • Pigeon Pose: Bend one knee in front of you and extend the other straight back. Gradually lower your pelvis to the floor, keeping your iliac bones level. This exercise perfectly relieves tension in the gluteal muscles and piriformis muscle.

The main mistakes that prevent you from doing the splits after forty

Often people quit training after a month or two, deciding that their time is irretrievably gone. But the problem lies not in age, but in methodological errors that 90% of beginners make. Let's sort them out so you don't step on this rake.

Haste and the pursuit of quick results

Forget advertising slogans like “splits in 30 days.” At forty years and older, this is physiologically impossible and extremely dangerous. Rebuilding tendons and fascia takes time. Some will need six months, some a year of regular training, and some even a year and a half. And that's absolutely normal! Savor the process itself, enjoy every new millimeter, and the result will come as a natural consequence of proper work.

Comparing yourself to young gymnasts or other students

When you come to a general Stretching group and see how a young girl easily folds herself in half, your motivation may drop. Remember: she has a completely different anatomy, a different hormonal background and, possibly, congenital hypermobility of the joints, which is not always beneficial for health. Your only point of comparison is yourself a week ago. If today you leaned half a centimeter lower and felt freer, this is your personal grand victory.

Ignoring pain and training through force

The popular sports motto “No pain, no gain” is the worst guide for Stretching in adulthood. If during an exercise you feel a sharp, shooting, burning or throbbing pain, stop the movement immediately. This is a signal of a microtear of a muscle or ligament. Recovering from an injury in adulthood takes three times longer than in youth and will set back your progress by months. We work only with the soft, nagging pain of relaxation.

Holding your breath

As soon as you hold your breath during a difficult stretch, your body instantly tenses up, expecting a blow or injury. Breathing should be continuous, deep and even. We inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth, relaxing the jaw and face. A relaxed face is the key to a relaxed pelvis, since these zones are reflexively connected through the nervous system.

Conclusion: splits after 40 are your new youth

To summarize, I want to tell you straight: doing the splits after 40 years is not just real, it’s incredibly cool! This is the best way to prove to yourself that boundaries and limitations exist only in our heads. Regular Stretching will restore ease of gait, relieve stiffness in the lower back, improve blood circulation in the pelvic organs, normalize sleep and give a colossal surge of vital energy.

Yes, this path will require patience, discipline and respect for your body. But trust my many years of coaching experience: when you touch the floor with your pelvis for the first time in your life, feeling complete freedom of movement, you will understand that every minute of training was worth this moment of triumph.

If you want to go through this path as safely as possible, under the supervision of an experienced mentor, avoid annoying injuries and receive an individual training program adapted to the characteristics of your body, I am ready to help you. I conduct personal lessons online and offline, where I carefully and professionally guide each of my students towards their cherished goal.
