Developing body flexibility: The scientific approach and rules for safe Stretching

Every person is born with a certain level of joint mobility, but over the years, under the influence of sedentary work, constant stress and lack of regular physical activity, our body begins to lose its natural elasticity. Stiffness in movements, tension in the joints, and heaviness in the back appear. Developing flexibility is not just about being able to do a nice splits, it is a critical factor for maintaining healthy joints, the spine and overall lightness of the body.

What is flexibility and why is it declining?

From a physiological point of view, flexibility is the ability to perform movements in joints with maximum anatomical amplitude. It depends on several key factors:

  • The structure of the joints. The unique shape of the bones and articular sockets determines strict anatomical limits of movement. We cannot change the shape of the bone, but the elasticity of the surrounding soft tissue is completely trainable.
  • Condition of muscles and tendons. Muscle fibers are capable of Stretching, but if they are constantly shortened (for example, during sedentary work), the brain gets used to this length and blocks attempts to make deep movements.
  • Hydration and elastin. With age, connective tissue loses moisture, collagen fibers become denser, and elastin production decreases. Systematic flexibility training stimulates blood circulation and keeps tissues young and elastic.
  • State of the nervous system. The muscle stretches as much as the brain allows it. The protective stretch reflex (myotatic reflex) sharply contracts the muscle if it considers the movement to be dangerous. The secret to developing flexibility lies in reducing this tension.
“The main mistake most adults make is trying to stretch by force. The development of flexibility does not occur through violence, but through relaxation and conscious work with breathing. Only when the nervous system feels safe does it allow the muscle to relax and lengthen.”

Types of Stretching: how to choose the right method?

There are several basic training methods for developing flexibility, each of which solves its own problem:

  1. Static Stretching. The most effective and physiological method for adults. You get into a comfortable Stretching position and hold it for 30-60 seconds. This time is enough for the protective reflex to turn off and the muscle to safely lengthen.
  2. Dynamic Stretching. Soft, controlled springy movements with a gradual increase in amplitude. The ideal tool for warming up before your main workout.
  3. Active Stretching. The tension position is maintained by the force of your own antagonistic muscles (for example, you lift your leg up only with the strength of your thigh muscles). Develops active joint control.
  4. Passive Stretching. Stretching muscles using external pressure - your own body weight, the help of a partner or trainer. Requires maximum concentration and accuracy.

5 Golden Rules for Safe Stretching

To ensure that your training brings results and not injury, strictly follow the following rules:

  • 1. Mandatory warm-up. Never stretch on a cold body. 10-15 minutes of joint warm-up, light cardio or soft squats will improve blood circulation, make the synovial fluid in the joints more fluid, and the ligaments more flexible.
  • 2. Graduality and patience. Rapid Stretching is a myth that leads to injuries and micro-tears. Muscles and tendons adapt slowly. Progress smoothly, millimeter by millimeter, without rushing to overtake your body's natural recovery rate.
  • 3. No acute pain. Never push through tears or sharp, stabbing pain. The workout should cause a feeling of strong, but pleasant, “sweet” tension. If acute pain occurs - this is a signal of microdamage, immediately reduce the amplitude.
  • 4. Deep diaphragmatic breathing. Don't hold your breath. Inhaling slowly through your nose and exhaling smoothly, long out through your mouth helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system. Relaxation of the body occurs precisely when exhaling.
  • 5. Regularity. Flexibility is a rapidly disappearing skill. Exercising for 15–20 minutes every day or every other day will give enormously greater results than one two-hour grueling workout once a week.
