The trembling you feel when you pull is not a sign of weakness or poor fitness. This is a complex physiological process, which is based on the protective mechanism of our nervous system.

Inside each muscle there are special receptors - muscle spindles. Their main task is to monitor the length of the muscle fiber and the rate at which it stretches. When you begin to stretch beyond your normal range, the muscle spindles immediately respond to this change. They send an emergency signal to the spinal cord: “Attention! The muscle is stretched too much, there is a risk of rupture!” The spinal cord instantly issues a response command to contract the same muscle. This process is called the myotatic reflex, or stretch reflex.

At the same moment, your will and consciousness tell your body: “No, we must relax and bend lower.” As a result, a severe conflict of interest arises:

  • Your central nervous system tries to force the muscle to contract to save it from potential injury.
  • By force of will you force it to lengthen.

This struggle between two opposing signals manifests itself at the microscopic level as a rapid series of contractions and relaxations. It is this process that you feel as vibration or tremor. The less your body is adapted to such stress, the stronger and harsher this reflex response will be.

The stretch reflex is the base, but the strength and frequency of the tremor depends on many contributing factors. Over the years of personal practice and working with hundreds of students, I have identified four main reasons why your body may begin to vibrate during a Stretching workout.

1. Neuromuscular fatigue and depletion of energy reserves

If you come to stretch after a hard strength workout, run, or functional training, your muscles are already exhausted. They have virtually no glycogen and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) left, the main source of energy for muscle contractions.

When a tired muscle is subjected to additional tension, it becomes much more difficult for the nerve centers to control its smooth functioning. Motor units (motoneurons and associated muscle fibers) begin to contract asynchronously. Instead of smoothly holding a pose, you get intermittent, jerky work of muscle groups, which is expressed in strong tremors.

2. Excessive intensity and forcing flexibility

Many people make the critical mistake of trying to get quick results at any cost. They push through the intense, sharp pain, hoping that the body will get used to it faster. In fact, the opposite is happening.

Acute pain is perceived by the brain as a signal of a direct threat to the integrity of the body. In response to this, the adrenal glands release adrenaline into the blood, the sympathetic nervous system is activated, and muscle tone increases sharply. Trying to stretch a muscle that is spasming from fear and pain, you will inevitably encounter strong resistance and severe trembling. This is a clear sign that you have crossed the safety threshold.

3. Violation of water-salt balance and deficiency of microelements

For normal transmission of nerve impulses and smooth muscle contraction, the body needs water and electrolytes: magnesium, potassium, calcium and sodium. If you drink little water during the day or sweat actively during training without replenishing fluid loss, the balance of ions is disrupted.

Nerve endings become hypersensitive, they begin to generate chaotic impulses. This not only leads to trembling during Stretching, but can also trigger painful cramps (cramps), especially in the calves and feet.

4. Unpreparedness of the central nervous system for a new amplitude

Our nervous system is very conservative. She allows joints to move only within limits that she considers safe and controlled. If you have never done the splits in your life, your brain simply does not understand how to control your body in this extreme position.

Trembling in this case is a manifestation of the nervous system’s fear of the unknown. The brain cannot coordinate the work of synergistic and antagonistic muscles in a new plane, which is why chaotic muscle activity occurs.

Normal or dangerous: how to understand when muscle tremors during Stretching are acceptable

Many people wonder: should you immediately stop training if shaking begins, or can you continue with force? Here it is important to learn to listen to your body and clearly distinguish between the two types of tremor.

Physiological (work) tremors. It is usually mild, controllable and not accompanied by acute pain. You feel tension, the muscles vibrate slightly, but at the same time you can breathe deeply and calmly. If you reduce the amplitude a little (literally a couple of centimeters), the trembling disappears or becomes minimal. This is an absolutely normal adaptation reaction. Your nervous system probes new boundaries and gradually learns to relax target areas in unusual positions.

Pathological (destructive) trembling. This type of tremor is characterized by a large amplitude, the limbs literally shake, and you cannot control it. The process is accompanied by sharp, burning or shooting pain, cold sweat, rapid heartbeat and reflexive holding of breath.

If you continue to hold the pose in this state, you are guaranteed to suffer micro-tears in the muscle fibers or tendons. Subsequently, hard connective (scar) tissue forms at the site of these microtraumas. It does not have elasticity, which is why your flexibility will not only not improve, but will also deteriorate significantly, and the recovery process will take many months.

Over the years of teaching safe Stretching techniques, I have developed several golden rules that help my students completely get rid of tremors, relax the nervous system and achieve impressive results without violence to the body. Apply these recommendations to every workout.

Apply the 70% Rule

Never stretch to the maximum of your capabilities from the first minutes. The optimal intensity for high-quality and safe development of flexibility is approximately 70% of your subjective maximum. You should feel a faint, pleasant tension, but not pain. In this comfort zone, your nervous system does not feel threatened, your muscle spindles do not sound the alarm, which means your muscles remain relaxed and pliable.

Master diaphragmatic breathing

Breathing is the main control panel of our autonomic nervous system. Short, intermittent chest breathing activates the sympathetic system (fight or flight mode), causing the muscles to contract.

To start the relaxation process, breathe from your stomach (diaphragm). Take a calm breath in through your nose for 3-4 counts, and then slowly, smoothly exhale through your mouth for 6-8 counts. With each exhalation, mentally direct your attention to the area that is currently Stretching and imagine how the tension leaves it. Deep exhalation stimulates the vagus nerve, which activates the parasympathetic system, which is responsible for peace and relaxation. Trembling with this approach disappears by itself.

Use the post-isometric relaxation (PIR) method

This is a professional therapeutic tool that works wonders. If the muscle stubbornly trembles and does not want to relax, use a deceptive maneuver for the nervous system:

  • Assume a position of moderate tension.
  • Then, for 6-8 seconds, consciously tense the muscle being stretched to about 30% of your strength, providing yourself with gentle resistance with your hands or the floor. Inhale while doing this.
  • After this, take a deep, soft exhale and completely relax. You will notice how the reflex tone subsides, and you will be able to descend deeper easily and without any trembling.

Take time to get a good workout

Never stretch cold muscles. Dry and cold tissue is not elastic; it instantly reacts to tension with spasm and trembling. Before Stretching, be sure to spend 10-15 minutes doing joint exercises, light squats, rotations and dynamic movements with a small amplitude. Warmed blood will bring oxygen and nutrients to the muscles, making them soft and obedient.

Stay hydrated and rest

Make sure you have enough clean water in your diet. If you frequently experience muscle tremors or cramps, consult your doctor and have your blood electrolyte levels checked. You may need to add mineral water or a magnesium complex to your diet. Also, never exercise in a state of severe physical or emotional exhaustion - a tired brain simply will not be able to provide high-quality control over relaxation.

Muscle trembling during training is not a wall that you need to break through with your forehead, but a delicate signal from your body, urging you to adjust the load.
