Incorrect Anatomical Position of the Pelvis and Knees
Errors in biomechanics are the most common cause of nerve compression. Here are typical examples of incorrect technique:
- Tilting the pelvis backward in a middle split. Instead of rotating the pelvis forward in the hip joints, students often round their lower back. This creates colossal pressure on the intervertebral discs of the lumbar spine, where the nerves that innervate the legs originate.
- Turning the back leg outward in a front split. If you turn the thigh of the back leg outward, the pelvis twists. This leads to uneven tension in the piriformis muscle, which pinches the sciatic nerve (known as piriformis syndrome).
- Overextending the knees (hyperextension). The desire to 'lock' the knees by pushing them backward pinches the popliteal nerve and popliteal artery, causing instant numbness in the shin and foot.
Lack of Proper Breathing
Holding your breath during a difficult exercise activates the sympathetic nervous system, shifting the body into 'fight or flight' mode. - Reach a point of light tension (about 4–5 points on a 10-point discomfort scale) and hold it there.
- Direct your attention to the area of tension and mentally "breathe out" through it, allowing the body to gradually sink lower under its own weight.
- If you feel the muscle start to shake or turn to stone, you have gone too far. Take a step back.

- Exit the pose immediately and smoothly. No sudden movements! Slowly bring your legs together, assisting with your hands.

- Restore blood circulation. Do a light self-massage: gently tap your thighs with your palms, massage your feet and shins from bottom to top to stimulate venous return.
- Perform gentle joint movements. Rotate your feet, wiggle your toes, and do a few soft knee flexions and extensions without load.
- Do not return to the exercise immediately. Allow the body to recover completely. If sensation has returned, you can continue training, but with an amplitude at least 30% less than before.
Regular Warm-up and Joint Mobilization
Never start stretching for the splits 'cold'. A good warm-up raises muscle temperature, makes ligaments and tendons more elastic, and increases synovia production in the joints. Dedicate 10–15 minutes to joint gymnastics, light squats, and pelvic rotations. Pay special attention to hip joint mobilization and warming up the lumbar spine — this will reduce the risk of nerve root compression at the very beginning of its path.
