Flexibility and joint health - connection and facts

When you wake up in the morning, do you feel absolute lightness in your body? Or do your first steps resemble the movements of an unlubricated robot that needs time to “disperse”? My name is Vyacheslav Komakha, I am a professional Stretching coach with more than ten years of practical experience, the founder of the flexderek.com project. Over the years of working with thousands of students of different ages and skill levels, I have become convinced: flexibility and joint health - this is not a gift of genetics and not a privilege of young athletes. Anatomy of movement: why flexibility and joint health are inseparable

To understand why flexibility is critical, let's look inside our bodies. A joint is more than just a place where two bones connect. This is a complex living structure, covered with cartilage tissue and surrounded by an articular capsule. Cartilage has one unique feature: it does not have its own blood vessels. It cannot receive nutrients directly from the blood the way muscles or internal organs can.

Synovial fluid is the elixir of youth for cartilage

The nutrition of cartilage tissue occurs exclusively due to the synovial fluid, which fills the joint cavity. It works on the principle of a sponge. As the joint contracts and releases through its full range of motion, the cartilage releases waste products and absorbs a fresh supply of nutrient-rich synovial fluid. If you move little or your muscles are constantly tight, this pump stops working. The cartilage begins to “starve”, dry out, become thinner and gradually collapse. This is how arthrosis begins.

How tight muscles destroy the joint capsule

When the muscles surrounding a joint lose elasticity and shorten, they begin to constantly, even at rest, pull the bones together. The pressure inside the joint increases sharply. Imagine that you constantly walk in shoes that are two sizes too small for you. Your knees, hips, and spine experience much the same thing when you ignore Stretching. Regular flexibility training allows you to relieve this excess muscle tension, increase inter-articular space and give the joint the opportunity to “breathe” and recover.

Mistakes when Stretching for joints: how not to harm yourself

During my coaching practice, I have seen hundreds of injuries received by people while practicing on their own or under the guidance of unqualified instructors. The desire to get quick results is the main enemy of a healthy body. Remember: joints do not forgive haste and effort.

  • Forcing the load through sharp pain. There is a dangerous myth: “no pain, no progress.” In Stretching, this principle leads to disability. Pain is a signal from the nervous system that tissue is on the verge of rupture. If you are in severe pain, the muscles reflexively contract even more to protect themselves. As a result, you do not pull the muscles, but injure the tendons and ligaments, which practically do not restore their elasticity.
  • Ballistic (springing) movements without control. Sharp swings, jerks and springy swings with a large amplitude without pre-warming often lead to micro-tears of muscle fibers. At the site of these tears, tough connective tissue (scars) later forms, which makes the muscle even less elastic.
  • Ignoring warm-up. Trying to stretch a “cold” body is like Stretching dry plasticine just taken from the refrigerator. It will just break. Before any Stretching, light joint warming is necessary to increase blood circulation and make the tissues more pliable.

Developing flexibility: a step-by-step algorithm for safe training from Vyacheslav Komakha

In order for Stretching to bring exceptional benefits and contribute to the healing of the joint-ligamentous system, I recommend sticking to a technique that has been proven over the years. My approach is based on a gentle, conscious impact and the body without violence.

The Three P Rule: Gradually, Constantly, Correctly

Your body is a smart system that adapts to any conditions, but it takes time. If you train once every two weeks, but “work up a sweat”, there will be no effect. It is much better to spend 15-20 minutes Stretching every day or do a full hour-long workout 3 times a week. Consistency is the key to rewiring the nervous system that controls your muscle tone.

Step-by-step structure of proper training

Each of your classes should be built according to a strict plan:

  • Gently warm up (5-10 minutes). Light rotations in the joints, starting from the neck and ending with the ankle, smooth bends, squats without weight. Your task is to sweat slightly and warm up your joints, triggering the production of lubricant.
  • Static traction (main part). Get into a position where you feel a pleasant, gentle stretch in the target muscle. No sharp pain! The tension should be 4-5 points on a 10-point scale.
  • Hold the pose (from 30 to 90 seconds). It is during this time that the nervous system has time to adapt, the primary protective reflex of muscle contraction goes away, and it begins to relax and lengthen.
  • Smooth exit from an asana or exercise. Never quit a pose abruptly. Return to the starting position slowly, helping yourself with your hands.

Breathing as the main tool for relaxation

You should not hold your breath while Stretching. As soon as you hold your breath, your brain reads it as a danger signal and commands your muscles to tense. Breathe deeply, calmly, focusing on long, relaxed exhalation. With each exhalation, mentally direct relaxation to the area you are currently Stretching.

Myths about healthy joints and flexibility that it’s time to stop believing

Over the years of coaching, I regularly come across ingrained stereotypes that prevent people from taking the first step towards a healthy body. Let's look at the most popular of them.

Myth 1: “It’s too late for me to start, my joints are ossified”

This is absolutely not true. In my classes, people aged 50, 60 and even 70 years old have achieved amazing results. Yes, the rate of tissue adaptation in adulthood is lower than in twenty years. But joints retain the ability to recover and increase mobility throughout life. The main thing is to use gentle techniques and not rush things. Healthy joints are available at any age.

Myth 2: “If your joints are cracking, Stretching is contraindicated.”

The crunching in the joints itself, without pain, is most often a harmless phenomenon associated with the bursting of gas bubbles in the synovial fluid (cavitation) or the tendon gently touching the bone protrusions. If the crunch is not accompanied by pain, swelling or limitation of mobility, it is not a contraindication to training. On the contrary, regular gentle Stretching helps optimize the distribution of load in the joint, after which the crunching often simply disappears.

Myth 3: “Flexibility is only about Stretching muscles”

In fact, flexibility depends on a whole range of factors: muscle elasticity, tendon condition, flexibility of joint capsules, as well as the functioning of your nervous system. You can't stretch bones or stiff ligaments (thank goodness, otherwise the joints would lose stability). We work specifically with muscle tone and fascia - the connective tissue membranes that cover all our muscles. It is the fascia that often “sticks together” during a sedentary lifestyle, limiting our movements.

Investing in your future: why flexibility is important for longevity

Think about how you want to look and feel in 10, 20 or 30 years. Do you want to stay active, bend over easily to tie your shoes, play with your grandchildren, travel without constant back and knee pain? Joint health is being built right now.

Each flexibility workout is your contribution to active longevity. When your joints are mobile and your muscles are elastic, your body uses much less energy to perform normal daily movements. Posture improves, gait becomes light and springy, congestion in the pelvis and limbs goes away, sleep normalizes thanks to the relaxation of the nervous system after Stretching.
