Hello. My name is Vyacheslav Komakha. I have coached since 2009 — I help people drop locks and sit the splits without injury. In classes and online on flexderek.com I hear the same question every day: why does one leg stretch worse than the other, and how do you beat that stubborn resistance? You train for months, the left leg almost reaches the floor, the right feels wooden. That irritating asymmetry in the splits is not a reason to quit or call yourself defective. It is a biomechanical signal you can work with.
The body is an archive of habits. Perfectly symmetrical people do not exist. Regular training just makes hidden tilts visible.
Which leg starts the step? Which one do you stand on in a queue? Which one sits on top when you cross your legs? Most people have a clear support leg. It takes more daily load; its muscles and ligaments are stiffer, stronger, more stable. The other is the swing leg — more mobile, often weaker. Uneven weight shifts one half of the pelvis; thigh muscles adapt to different tone.
Spine and pelvis are one kinematic chain. Even a small scoliosis or the habit of carrying a heavy bag on one shoulder makes the pelvis adapt. It rotates or lifts on one side. Hamstrings, tendons, and iliopsoas on one side stay overworked. In front or middle splits the short side will not let the pelvis open evenly.
People often forget a childhood ankle sprain, a groin pull in PE, or a hard hit to the thigh. The body answers any injury with a protective muscle shell. The nervous system blocks the site. Pain fades; the mobility limit stays as fascial adhesions and trigger points. During stretching the brain limits relaxation there to guard against a fictional threat.
Many spend 8–10 hours at a desk. If you always put the right leg over the left, the outer right thigh lengthens and the left groin shortens. Worse: sitting with one foot under you. That chronically tilts the pelvic bones and sacrum. One leg then stretches worse simply because you trained the body for hours in a deformed position.
When students see one leg lag, they often make a critical error. They stretch both legs with the same intensity and the same program, hoping the lagging side will catch up. Or they force the stiffer leg through unbearable pain. That only brings injury and regression.
Ignore the imbalance and you risk:
Treat the legs as two different students in one class. One learns easily. The other needs more time, attention, and a different approach.
People usually do right, then left. If the left is worse, change the scheme. Always start with the stiff leg. Then stretch the soft one. Then add a third set again on the problem side. The lagging leg gets twice the time under load. The nervous system adapts faster.
If the flexible leg holds one minute, the stiff leg should hold at least two. Intensity on the stiff side stays moderate — about 5–6 out of 10. Do not try to tear the muscle. The job is to teach the brain the position is safe. That takes time, not aggressive pressure.
Before stretching the lagging leg, release it with a roller or ball. Lower tone first; then the stretch lands on tissue that can yield.
