You wake after training, try to get out of bed, and every move aches in the thighs, hamstrings, or back. The first thought: why do muscles hurt after stretching — is this a normal response to load, or a stretching injury that needs treatment now? My name is Vyacheslav Komakha. I have taught people safe flexibility since 2009 with a method that excludes violence against the body. On flexderek.com I help people see how proper muscle stretching should feel. Today we will sort which pain after stretching is normal and which is a warning.
Over the years I have seen hundreds of students arrive from classic stretching studios in tears. They were taught to endure savage pain for a fast splits. That approach is wrong. For training to give health and long-lived joints, you have to read the body’s signals.
When you work flexibility, muscle fibers and fascia take an unusual load. Stretch is physical stress. The body answers with a reaction that beginners often confuse with damage.
During intense stretching, microscopic tears appear in the myofibrils. Do not fear the word. It is a normal process. The body answers with inflammation and repair. The muscle becomes more elastic and stronger. That pain is delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) — in everyday speech, the post-workout ache people call крепатура in Russian. It shows up 12–24 hours after training, feels dull and aching, and rises when you stretch or load the same group again.
Muscle spindles sit inside the muscle. A strong stretch sends a signal to the spinal cord and the muscle contracts to protect itself from tearing. If you force through that resistance, you get a strong burn. Light, controlled burn during the drill and soft tiredness after it means you worked in a useful range.
The line between useful discomfort and injury is thin, especially without a coach or when you force the result. A stretching injury can take you out of training for a long time and damage the musculoskeletal system.
If during a fold or the splits you feel a sudden shooting pulse, like an electric shock or a string snapping — stop immediately. That is not “good pain you must endure.” That is mechanical damage: a severe strain or a full tear of fiber, tendon, or ligament.
Muscle has good blood supply and recovers relatively fast. Ligaments and tendons barely stretch; their job is to stabilize joints. Pain right under the knee, in the groin folds, around the hips, or at muscle-to-bone attachments is a warning. Ligament recovery can take months to a year.
I built a system so students gain flexibility without injury, tears, and endless pain. Muscle stretching should bring ease, not medieval torture.
The main beginner error is “pushing” the body with bouncing or a partner pressing from above. In my method (more on flexderek.com) the key is relaxation. Enter a light pull and stay there, focusing on the exhale. Only when the nervous system decides there is no danger will it let the muscle lengthen. Stretch at most 6–7 out of 10 on your sensation scale.
Never stretch a cold body. Raise circulation, temperature, and do joint work first. Synovial fluid thins; muscle and fascia yield better. Ten to fifteen minutes of light squats, joint circles, and dynamic drills is enough.
One aggressive hour once a week brings injury and disappointment. Fifteen to twenty minutes daily or every other day works far better. The body likes gradual change.
